The City's compost site will be opening for the season on Sunday, April 1st. The City Commission recently expanded the site's hours in April and October; Monday and Thursday the site is now open until 7:30 p.m. The compost site is located on the south side of Fawn River Road between S. Lakeview Avenue and S. Nottawa Street. The site is open from April through November and accepts only leaves, grass clippings and brush. The compost site is open Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. April through October, the compost site is open from noon to 7:30 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday. In November the site is open from noon to 6:00 p.m. Monday and Thursday and the same times on Saturday and Sunday. Residents of the City of Sturgis can access the compost site free of charge. When visiting the site they must present their driver's license with Sturgis address or other proof of City residence. By virtue of an agreement with the City, residents of Sturgis Township also have free access to the compost site; they can obtain a compost pass card by registering each year with the Clerk/Treasurer's Office at City Hall. Residents not from the City or Sturgis Township must pay a non-refundable fee of $35.00 for a yearly pass card; they can obtain cards at City Hall. Pass cards are valid for the entire year (April to late November) and the cost is the same regardless of purchase date.
