2012 Fall Leaf Pick up Schedule

The City of Sturgis Department of Public Services (DPS) will begin fall leaf pickup on Monday October 29th. Crews will follow the same route as they do with brush pick up, starting north of Chicago Rd. and west of N. Nottawa St. working their way across the north side of town and then through the south side. Leaf pick up will resume each day where crews left off the day before. Leaf pick up will continue following this schedule through the end of November, as weather permits.

Under the City's current composting system, it is preferred that you do not put leaves in plastic bags. If you choose to put leaves in bags, please cohntact the DPS office at 651-2879 between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday so special arrangements can be made for pick up. Bagged leaves may be taken to the compost site during scheduled hours; however, you must dump the leaves from the bags. Halloween Trick or Treating

Halloween is quickly approaching! The City of Sturgis trick or treating hours will be as follows:

The Downtown businesses will host trick or treating on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, from 4pm to 6pm. The community wide trick or treating will be from 6pm to 8pm.

Here are a few safety tips to consider while trick or treating:

Children should:

Go only to well-lit houses and remain on porches rather than entering houses.

Travel in small groups and be accompanied by an adult.

Carry a cell phone and know how to reach you and how to call 911 in an emergency, like if they get lost.

Have their full names and phone number attached to their costumes somewhere if they are too young to remember them.

Bring treats home before eating them so parents can inspect them. Although the risk that your child's Halloween candy has been tampered with is extremely low, there is also the chance that his candy is unwrapped or spoiled.
