The final City-wide brush pickup will begin on Monday, October 3rd. Please be sure to follow the guidlines below for brush pickup: * No limbs, branches or brush material larger than 4" in diameter will be collected. * No limbs, branches or brush material longer than 8' in length will be collected. * No grass clippings, roots, thorn bearing branches, tree trunks, stumps, or construction materials will be collected. * A limit of 1 truck load of material per parcel will be collected and hauled away. * Materials must be neatly stacked on the terrace away from objects or obstructions such as power poles, guy wires, sign posts, valve boxes, etc. * Please note that it is unlawful to place brush beyond the curb in the street. Memorial park has a couple of new features following the construction there this summer, including a parking lot and garden. During a sunny day these features are great to look at and useful, but they really shine when it starts raining. The reason is that the garden is really a rain garden and the parking lot is made of a special asphalt that soaks drains water through its surface. These are just two of several rain water management elements the City installed as part of a Nonpoint Source Program grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The grant provided the City with funds to install several Low Impact Development, or LID, elements at Memorial Park and the new Public Services and Utilities Building (PSUB) site as demonstration tools. Starting Tuesday, September 20th through Friday, the 23rd the Department of Public Services will be conducting hydrant flushing in areas throughout the City. The schedule is: Tuesday the 20th: The area south of East Chicago Rd and east of South Nottawa Wednesday the 21st: The area south of West Chicago Rd and west of South Nottawa Thursday the 22nd: The area north of East Chicago Rd and east of North Nottawa Friday the 23rd: The area north of West Chicago Rd and west of North Nottawa Should any water discoloration occur at your faucet, let the water flow for several minutes until it becomes clear. Sturgis electric customers are invited to provide comments on the City of Sturgis Electric Department's updated Energy Optimization Plan now through September 30th. The updated plan provides for changes to the City's current Energy Optimization plan filed in 2009. The plan will be presented to the City Commission at their meeting on September 14th, with the opportunity for public comment. The establishment of an energy optimization plan is required by the state of Michigan for all electric utilities as part of Public Act 295 of 2008. It requires utilities to reduce the amount of electric usage by customers a certain percentage each year, achieved through an incentive program open to residential and business customers.
