As winter approaches, so too does snow and snow removal season. Below are a few quick reminders about winter weather procedures, including City snow plowing, sidewalk maintenance, and driving tips for winter weather. The City of Sturgis handles snow removal based on the amount of snowfall received. Snowfalls between less than one inch and three inches will be met with applications of deicers and plowing; depending on the amount of snow, this may include plowing of intersections, major streets, and/or local streets. Snowfalls of 4 inches or more are categorized as Snow Removal Emergencies; this condition can also be declared by the City using various media outlets, including the City's website. The Sturgis City Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, December 19th to consider changing when Commission members are elected. The discussion comes following the passage of legislation by the State of Michigan allowing municipalities to change their election date to reduce the number of elections. The legislation allows for cities that currently elect their councils or commissions in odd-numbered years, as the City of Sturgis does, to move these elections to even-numbered years, when either gubernatorial or presidential elections occur. One benefit of this change would be the elimination of a regular election every other year. Currently the Sturgis City Commission holds elections for its members in November of odd-numbered years. By moving the City Commission election to November of even-numbered years this would save the costs of an additional election, typically around $5,000. The City of Sturgis Department of Public Services has completed the leaf pick-up for this year. At this time, the compost site is also closed for the year. The compost site will be open the first two Saturday's in January for the disposal of Christmas trees. The compost site is located on the south side of Fawn River Rd. between S. Lakeview Ave. and S.
