We take great pride in our City electric department for good reason. Last night we experienced a mild ice storm and like many times in the past, Sturgis seems to avoid the worst of the weather. As we heard on the news this morning, many electric utilities in surrounding areas have thousands of customers without power. Thanks to our reliable system and fine crew, we had limited outages and by 7:00 a.m. the majority of customers were back up and running. In my mind, the most amazing aspect is that while most people were sound asleep last night, our electric employees were hard at work minimizing or preventing any interruptions in service. Thank you to our electric line employees for keeping the lights on. I'm proud that we continue a tradition of providing reliable electricity to our customers.
The Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) Tuesday approved tax incentives for Metalloid Corporation, a metalworking lubricants company considering location in Sturgis. Receiving the MEGA tax credit is considered a “critical step” in bringing the business to Sturgis, but not a final one. City officials have been working with the company on the possibility of locating in Sturgis for several months and are hopeful the granting of the MEGA tax credit will move the project along. According to the application filed with MEGA, Metalloid would invest $365,000.00 to locate in Sturgis and estimates creating 30 jobs over five years should the project come to pass.

Well, while we may have had blizzard like conditions, it seems the “monster blizzard of the decade” as I heard one tv reporter term it, should be more accurately characterized as a significant snow event. For the City, it was an opportunity to observe how the new snow emergency ordinance modification might improve plowing efficiency. To find out for myself, I hopped a ride with a DPS employee for a couple hours and immediately noticed that the streets were clear of vehicles, allowing for better and quicker removal of snow. Streets without obstacles also make it safer for employees and minimize future accidents. Thank you to residents for partnering with the City to move vehicles from the streets.
