ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Performs manual and mechanical work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in connection with wastewater plant operations; monitors the operation of the treatment plant(s) both directly and by SCADA. Controls wastewater treatment plant machines and equipment. Regularly handles highly hazardous chemicals. Places specified amounts of chemicals into wastewater; adjusts automatic devices to admit specific amounts of chemicals into water for treatment and disinfection. Performs chemical analysis and routine laboratory tests on wastewater. Safely operates trucks and tractors in the disposal of solid waste as needed. Performs preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment; repairs and lubricates machines and equipment using hand and power tools. Individually performs building maintenance, light equipment maintenance, grounds keeping and housekeeping duties. As part of a crew, performs heavy maintenance and repair tasks relative to plant operations and equipment. Maintains written operational records; records meter and gauge readings; performs basic arithmetic calculations and interprets results. Receives and responds to customer telephone calls. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools utilized in the operation, repair and maintenance of waste treatment machinery and equipment. Sufficient knowledge of basic electricity to affect minor repairs and adjustments. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Ability to perform basic arithmetic calculations. Ability to descend and ascend ladders and stairs to obtain access to affect necessary repairs. Ability to withstand occupancy in confined spaces; non-claustrophobic. Ability to work with and around chemicals. Ability to work without direct supervision and to make routine judgments. Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Possession of a valid Florida Class “C”, “B”, or “A” certificate for wastewater treatment plant operators. An equivalent combination of training and experience that is determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid Florida Class E drivers’ license and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven. Must be able to work shift work. Absence of non-prescribed controlled substances in the applicant’s system as verified by a laboratory approved by the City of Winter Haven.
