On Saturday, October 7th from 11 AM to 3 PM, the Rye Historical Society’s Square House Museum will host a Civil War Encampment as part of the Girl Scout Gold Award project of Kristina Marchand, Girl Scout Troop 2282 and a senior at Rye High School. Admission to the event is $20 per family. The Square House Museum is located at 1 Purchase Street, Rye, NY. Kristina has organized a Civil War Encampment with re-enactors illustrating the life of a soldier during the 1860s. The public is invited to learn about camp life, uniforms, food and medicine and also take part in drills. This special family program will also include activities and crafts illustrating the daily life of families in the mid-19th century. Kristina herself has been a re-enactor with the 125th New York State Volunteers since she was 5 years old. This is the same company her ancestor was part of more than 150 years ago. Her Gold Award project combines her love of history with her dedication to Girl Scouts. This event is part of the I Love NY Path Through History Weekend Oct. 7-9, a statewide initiative launched in 2012 to highlight New York’s unparalleled network of museums, historical sites and cultural institutions and to promote tourism and economic development. The Rye Historical Society and the Square House Museum are open Tuesday to Friday 9 AM to 4 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM. 10/14/2017 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM (NOT FOR PROFIT) Open House at Meeting House
The Bird Homestead nonprofit invites the public to view the conservation work in progress inside the historic Rye Meeting House at an informal open house on Saturday, October 14, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. A conservator has revealed one surprising image after another under the existing off-white paint on the walls of the chancel of the former Episcopal chapel. Wainscoting exists below the plaster on the three walls of the chancel. In the late 19th-century it was painted to imitate the look of oak paneling in a technique called graining or faux bois. Copying an original untouched sample found under a later molding, an artist has replicated the color and subtle graining design on the woodwork. Thanks to the efforts of New York State Assemblyman Steve Otis, funding for this restoration project was made possible through a state grant. The State Historic Preservation Office approved the work plan. The nonprofit now needs to raise more funding to complete the conservation of the unexpected findings of wall images. Admission free. Light refreshments will be served. 624 Milton Road, Rye, NY 10580. For further information, birdhomestead.meetinghouse@gmail.com or 914.967.0099.

Q & A with producer Jim Ormond and additional special screening of his half-hour film adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

10/28/2017 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (NOT FOR PROFIT) Documentary Film at Meeting House
The Bird Homestead nonprofit and the Westchester County Historical Society will screen the recent documentary "Citizen Jane: Battle for the City" at 3 pm on Saturday, Oct. 28. Jane Jacobs was a tenacious activist in the 1960s, who challenged the powerful master builder Robert Moses from running roughshod over Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park in New York City with his plan to build a super highway. The film retraces the epic clash between Moses and Jacobs, as she fights a David and Goliath battle to save historic New York City during the ruthless redevelopment era of the 1960s. Her book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, sent shockwaves through the architecture and planning worlds at the time. The film emphasizes why her legacy remains crucial today.
