Felt boards and other props are sometimes used to enhance stories and model future classroom experiences. A fun craft project is designed around the story theme or a seasonal topic. Parents and caregivers are asked to assist younger children using scissors, glue and other art materials.

The Bird Homestead nonprofit and Central Westchester Audubon will present Butterflies in My Back Yard at the Rye Meeting House by lepidopterist Victor DeMasi on Saturday, May 13 at 4 pm. Mr. DeMasi is a curatorial affiliate at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. With photos on PowerPoint, he will take the audience on a sunny day walk through his butterfly meadow in Connecticut. Along the way we will view some of the beautiful rare and common species he has seen there in 40 years of stewardship. He will explain the life histories of some species. He will discuss butterflies in our changing environment, touching on issues such as climate change and invasive plant species. He will bring an impressive display of specimens of museum quality. On Saturday, May 20, the Bird Homestead nonprofit will present a concert at the Meeting House on Milton Road by a quartet from Breakneck Ridge Revue, an acclaimed group of musicians from the Hudson Valley. This is a rare treat, because the band rarely performs on the Sound shore. The event will run from 6:30 to 8 pm and is co-sponsored by LI Sound Fest. The group is led by Andrew Revkin, a former New York Times environmental writer and current environmental journalist for ProPublica. For 20 years he was also a frequent accompanist of folk legend Pete Seeger. The ensemble of accomplished musicians will perform traditional, classic, and original songs with mostly-American folk roots. Some sea shanties will be included in recognition of the 19th-century history of Milton Harbor as a busy working port. Admission free.

9am > 1pm Meeting Room Seniors engage with the Rye Senior Advocacy Commission to discuss important issues that impact their lives and seek new proposals to enrich the lives of Rye's seniors and families. The sessions will deal with issues that are important to Rye seniors and local leaders, including housing options, special programs and the coordination of activities. The commission will seek ideas about new initiatives and suggestions for change.
