5/6/2017 10:30 AM (Library) FREE Kokedama workshop - Bedford Library
Kokedama, sometimes called string gardens or Japanese moss balls, are a form of bonsai that dates back to the Edo era in Japan, circa 1600. It is a variation of Japanese bonsai in which the roots of a plant are tucked into a ball of soil, and then wrapped with moss and string. Kokedama combines the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, or beauty of the imperfect, and the impermanent, with bonsai, an ancient Asian horticultural art form representing peace, harmony, and balance. These clever little string gardens can be suspended or placed on decorative pottery or wood. Plant choices can vary from houseplants, grasses, succulents, perennials, herbs, and more. Intrigued? Join Bedford Extension Master Gardeners and Bedford Public Libraries for a fun hands-on gardening experience. Each participant will take home their floral creation. Advance registration is required but this is a FREE workshop! To register, call the library where you'd like to attend the Kokedama workshop. Space is limited. Bedford Central Library: 540-586-8911

2nd Friday Event at The Electric Company Art Gallery May 12th from 5 PM to 8 PM Welcome Stan Fettig - Wood Carver Stan began carving at age 12 while in the Boy Scouts with a project of a neckerchief slide. His interest in carving continued through his military career where he made contact with other carvers. Here he learned various different techniques and became acquainted with better tools and how to sharpen them. This he carried into civilian life and better honed his craft in all the years that followed. Early carvings were mostly primitive and small using only a pocket knife. Now come and check out his work....impressive!
