1/8/2015 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM (Non-Profit Public Events) Films for a Future: Shift Change
Fogartyville Community Media & Arts Center, 525 Kumquat Ct., Sarasota Under the banner of "the best documentaries you probably haven't seen yet," we regularly screen films on a wide variety of topics related to Transition. Each film is typically followed by a speaker, group discussion, or other activity that connects the film's topic back to what we can do about it locally. Shift Change tells the little known stories of employee-owned businesses that compete successfully in today's economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces. There is growing interest in firms that are owned and managed by their workers. Such firms tend to be more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based. Yet the public has little knowledge of their success, and the promise they offer for a better life. With the long decline in US manufacturing and today's economic crisis, millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes. Following the film, we will hear from Caren Van Slyke. Her son, Brian, co-founded the worker-owned cooperative, Toolbox for Education and Social Action (TESA). Among other initiatives, TESA has created Co-Opoly, a board game in which participants collaborate to start and run a democratic and participatory enterprise. Sponsored by Region Solar. Admission: $5 at the door. No one turned away for lack of funds. For more information, please email info@transitionsrq.org or call (941) 408-3374.
