10/9/2014 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM (Events) Films for a Future : Urban Roots
Location: Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center Under the banner of "the best documentaries you probably haven't seen yet," we regularly screen films on a wide variety of topics related to Transition. Each film is typically followed by a speaker, group discussion, or other activity that connects the film's topic back to what we can do about it locally. Urban Roots is a documentary that tells the story of the emergence of urban farming in the city of Detroit. Once an industrial powerhouse, Detroit has been devastated by the collapse of the manufacturing sector and the loss of over half its population. But now, against all odds, on empty lots, in old factory yards, and between blocks of company housing, the seeds of change are taking root. Having found themselves living in "food deserts," without access to healthy, fresh produce, dedicated citizens are now reclaiming their power by growing food for themselves and their neighbors. And what they are doing not only has the potential to transform Detroit. Their story also serves as a hopeful example of what a truly sustainable, post-industrial economy might look like for all of us. Admission: $5 at the door. No one turned away for lack of funds. For more information, please email info@transitionsrq.org or call (941) 408-3374. Upcoming screeings in the Films for a Future 2014-2015 season include: Gasland II on Nov 13, Passive House Revolution on Dec 11, Shift Change on Jan 8, and Within Reach on Feb 12.

2542 17th Street, Sarasota, FL 34234 Learn how to walk adoptable Cat Depot cats on a leash and harness to provide the cats with much needed physical and mental stimulation. If you are interested in attending, you must register online http://www.catdepot.org/education/cat-socialization.aspx or email Cody at codyc@catdepot.org. In a shelter environment, we try to provide as much stimulation for the cats and kittens as possible to reduce stress and boredom. Teaching cats and kittens to walk on a leash not only provides stimulation, it improves social skills and increases their ability to adapt to new environments. It can also bring attention to some cats who normally do not stand out in a large group, increasing their chances of getting adopted.
