No, we do not.

Why should I recycle?
Recycling saves energy, reduces pollution, and preserves natural resources. So be part of the solution – Recycle! Pennsylvania state law requires municipalities like Nether Providence to operate recycling programs. Township residents can recycle two ways – by using the township’s curbside collection program, by bringing materials to the township’s recycling drop-off site at 5 W. Brookhaven Road -- or both!

How much does the township recycle?
In 2005, Nether Providence recycled over 8 tons of aluminum cans, 10 tons of bimetal cans, and 110 tons of glass, 410 tons of cardboard, and 400 tons of paper. For this, the township earned over $16,000.

Does the township earn money for the items we recycle?
Yes. The township sells recyclable materials to a recycler who collects the materials and in turn sells them to industries which use those materials to manufacture new products. The amount earned by the township depends on the market value of each material. In 2005, the township earned over $16,000 from the sale of recyclable materials. The township also earns Performance Grants from the State of Pennsylvania based on the amount of waste recycled each year.

Can all glass be recycled?
No. All glass food and beverage containers can be recycled. The following types of glass cannot be recycled: Drinking Glasses, Mirrors, Ceramics, Crystal, Light Bulbs, Ovenware, Window Glass.

Can all food cans be recycled?
Yes, but. . . Some food cans are actually aluminum! If you’re not sure if a can is aluminum or bi-metal, use a magnet to check. If the magnet sticks to the can, it’s bi-metal! If the magnet does not stick, then it is aluminum and should be recycled with the aluminum cans.

Is it OK to put aluminum food cans in with the aluminum soda cans at the recycling center?
Yes.

Do I need to do anything to “prepare” my recyclables?
Rinse out glass and metal containers to avoid attracting pests. Labels can be left on.

Can I recycle plastic bags or plastic bottles?
The township does not recycle plastic at this time. However, you may recycle your plastic bags by taking them to the grocery store. Residents who wish to recycle plastic bottles can take them to the McCusker transfer station at 725 East 4th Street in Chester, or the Waste Management transfer station at 408 South Oak Avenue in Primos.

When does leaf collection occur?
From mid-October until close to the end of the year, the Township will pick up leaves piled curbside. At other times of the year, the Township will pick up bagged leaves on Fridays upon request. Remember, to avoid traffic hazards, keep your leaves on the curb, not in the street.

Does the township collect yard waste?
Yard waste will be collected Fridays during the months of March and September. Yard waste should be bundled or bagged and brush and branches must be no longer than 3 feet in length. To schedule a pick up, please contact the Township Municipal office at 610.566.4516 by the Wednesday prior to the scheduled Friday pick-up.
