Often called a ”moving meditation” Tai Chi has its roots in martial arts. The movements are practiced slowly and smoothly with attention to proper posture and breathing. Tai Chi is easy to learn, effective and safe, it increases flexibility, muscle strength, and heart/lung activity, aligns posture, improves balance, and integrates the mind and body. Studies show a 70% reduction in reoccurring falls, 35% reduction in arthritis pain and an increase in performance of activities of daily living. Regular Tai Chi practice lowers high blood pressure, improves the immune system, reduces stress and increases strength and balance. Time Magazine called Tai Chi "the perfect exercise" - especially for the older adult. Classes taught by Master Tai Chi Trainer Ralph Dehner Certified Tai Chi Instructor, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant and one of only 17 Master/Trainers in Dr. Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Health programs in the U.S. Max 25. Make up days for swim team meets (meets are on Thursday evenings, June 27, July 11 and July 18 and the pool closes at 5pm due to meets) and for weather are on Fridays. Due to back to back sessions scheduled, we are unable to have additional make up days beyond Fridays. In addition, the pool manager may elect to have a “safety day” where swim lesson instructors will teach pool safety to participants during the scheduled lesson time due to weather conditions. Triathlon Training for Kids Session 1
Kids love to swim, bike and run, so triathlon is a perfect sport for them. But putting all three together is a little more complicated, physically and mentally. We will prepare your child for the endurance of a kids distance, give them confidence on their bikes, and how to transition safely from one sport to the next. We emphasize having fun and feeling good at the finish, safety, and the rules of the sport. Parents should plan to stay at the last session as we will go over how to support your child before and during the race, what is allowed, and important nutrition tips the week of the race (hydration and what to eat). A handout will be provided each week for review. Designed for kids who have never done a triathlon, or who have done one or two. Program taught by Elyse Jarard, certified triathlon training coach, owner of Montgomery’s Venus For Her. Kids Triathlon Training: 1-2:15pm Wednesdays Session 1: June 12, 19, 26 and July 10 (race on July 13) Minimum 5/Max10 participants. Training includes: Tote bag, 4 weeks of hands-on training, discount on races Focus of the training program is to prepare for endurance, transitions, feeling comfortable in each sport, and practicing with bricks (2 sports in a row). The program is designed to be fun and work towards a goal with a small group Week 1: at the Montgomery Pool Introduce; go over rules of the sport; assess swimming ability and identify improvements (if needed); go over safety strokes and practice; setting up transition zone—what you need, what you don’t need, what to eat before the sessions Week 2: at Pioneer Park (bring bike) Ride on different terrains (hills and flat) on a closed course to practice using gears, brakes, maneuvering, making sure bike is set up correctly; transitioning from bike to run. Week 3: at Montgomery Pool (bring all gear) Put all three sports together, practicing our transitions, and seeing how it feels to do it all together. We will also practice setting up the transition zone Week 4: at Montgomery Pool (parents to stay) Kids will set up their transition zones, and show parents. While kids are swimming, we will preview for the parents what the transition zone will look like, how to help set it up, what to eat before the race and basic rules. Handouts provided.
