Mosquito/Insect Control

The City of Monroe has an active mosquito control program which begins early each season with larvacide being placed in street-accessible catch basins throughout the City and control pellets in open-water such as ditches and retention ponds. A graphic containing the City catch basins is available here. The more visible part of the City mosquito control program involves systematic spraying of City streets and adjoining areas. Please note that the City does not normally target specific areas upon request however areas with severe insect problems will be noted and addressed as resources allow.

Homeowners and area business owners can take a number of steps to control mosquitoes on their own properties. Some steps that can be taken include:

- Keep grass and plantings trimmed to allow areas to thoroughly dry
- Thin trees and shrubs to allow light to penetrate for at least a portion of the day
- Clean eaves to allow for proper drainage - Adjust grade to allow for proper drainage and minimize standing water
- Empty standing water from containers, flowerpots, abandoned tires, and unused children’s swimming pools
- Empty birdbaths at least once per week
- Spray or treat yards with commercially available insecticides
