Who do I contact for information pertaining to the city commission agenda or meeting minutes?
Contact the City Manager's office for this type of information; if necessary, they will direct you to the proper department dealing specifically with your issue. To request that an item be placed on the City Commission agenda, a written request and any supporting documents should be submitted to the City Manager at least one week before a Commission meeting. Not all requests are placed on an agenda if there is a more expeditious way to handle them. A packet of agenda material is available for review in the Main Lobby of City Hall and at the Peter White Library either late Friday or Monday morning before a meeting. The agenda appears on the City's website (www.mqtcty.org) and Channel 21, usually late Friday afternoon.
What committees exist in the city and when do they meet?
The City of Marquette has over 20 boards and commissions which meet at various times throughout each month. Check out the 'Boards & Commissions' web page to view them all.
When is the Winter Parking Ban in effect?
The winter parking ban is in effect from November 1st through April 1st. You must find off-street parking from 1:00 am -6:00 am. Contact the Police Department, 228-0400 for more information. The fine is $50.00. City ordinances also prohibit right-of-way parking and front yard parking all year long.
Can I let my water run so that it doesn't freeze?
The City will notify residents when conditions warrant running the water at the City's expense. The Water Department records frost depths daily, and is aware of when there is a need to run water to prevent a freeze up. If a resident lets their water run without approval from the City, the resident will be responsible for all costs of wasted water.
What can I do when my mailbox was hit by a snow plow?
The Street Supervisor will go to the location and assess whether the mailbox was hit by the plow blade or toppled over by the weight of the snow. If the plow blade hit it by the plow, the City will replace or repair it at no charge. If the weight of the snow made it topple over, the homeowner is responsible for repairs.

When is the next election?
The Primary Election is always on the 2nd Tuesday in August. Absentee ballots will be available. Use www.publius.com to check out your voter status, etc. The City/General Election is always the 2nd Tuesday in November.
Can I burn brush or garbage in the city limits?
No. Pursuant to the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, opening burning that creates smoke or odor nuisances is prohibited. For more information, please reference the "open burning" section on the Marquette City Fire Department home page.
I rent an apartment, so am I eligible for a free smoke detector?
Anyone who lives within Marquette City limits is eligible for a free smoke detector and can also receive a free home safety inspection while the smoke detector is being installed. For more information please call our non-emergency number 228-0410.
If I have a fire in my apartment, my landlords insurance will cover my losses, right?
No. Too often we see apartment fires where tenants did not realize that they had no insurance coverage until they had lost everything they owned in a fire. Insurance premiums for renters are not terribly expensive and should be considered. For more information, contact your insurance provider.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas that is a bi-product of incomplete combustion (burning). Common sources in and around homes are: furnaces, hot water heaters, ranges, vehicles, lawnmowers, and any other "fuel burning" motor or appliance. What kind of fire extinguisher should I purchase for my home?
If you are going to purchase one, we suggest you buy an extinguisher that is A-B-C rated. That is, an extinguisher that will work on Ordinary combustibles: (A) such as paper, wood, and other natural materials. Flammable liquids: (B) such as petroleum products, cooking oils, etc. Fires involving Electrical equipment: (C) anything that is electrically charged.
What is the best place to mount smoke detectors?
Smoke detectors should be on every floor of the home. They should be mounted on, or near the ceiling for earliest detection (as smoke rises). Smoke detectors placed in cooking areas often give false alarms and therefore are often disabled. Place detector in an adjacent room to avoid nuisance alarms. Outside of sleeping areas and in basement stairways are also vital locations for placing detectors. What is the Rental Code Enforcement / Inspection?
The new Rental Fire Safety Code is Ordinance #521 of Chapter 42 of the City Code. The Marquette City Fire Department is in the process of inspecting all rental units within City. You can read all about it on the Marquette City Fire Department web page, or by calling (906) 228-0410. Each rental unit is allowed 2 parking spaces.
What are the ordinances pertaining to parking?
The ordinance which prohibits parking in the City Right-of-Way is #16, is enforced by the Police Department, and deals with the area from the front property line to the street. Ordinance #80 prohibits Front Yard Parking and is enforced by the Zoning Enforcement Official, and deals with the area from the front property line to the house. Where can I park in the Marquette downtown shopping area?
The W Main Parking Lot (between Front and Third) and the Lower Commons Lot (between Third and Fourth) has 10 hr. parking. There are 25 cent/hr meters in those lots. W. Washington has 1 hr. parking and the Upper Commons Lot has 1 hr. metered parking. Third Street has 2 hr. parking. The covered Lower Ramp has 2 hr. parking, with elevator access to W. Washington from the north. The Main St. Lot has 2hr. parking, with elevator access to W. Washington from the south.

When is the deadline for paying my Property Taxes?
The summer tax statements will be mailed June 30th. They are payable through August 4th without penalty. The winter tax statements will be mailed on November 30th, and are payable through February 14th without penalty. If you should have received a tax statement, but did not, please contact the City Financial Services Office at 228-0475.
Does the City of Marquette participate in recycling?
Yes, Waste Management - located at 910 Baraga Avenue, telephone number 228-2028 - has recycling bins available for $6.00. The fee is refunded, when returned with the receipt. The Public Works Department has spring and fall collection schedules. Call (906) 228-0444 to get more information or visit Rubbish, Brush, Leaf Disposal Webpage. You may also bring your yard waste to the Compost Site on Lakeshore Boulevard on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 - 7:00 pm.
When is the Lakeshore Boulevard Compost Site open?
The hours of operation are: Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00 - 7:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Proof of residency or a utility bill with a garbage fee is required for admittance. The Drop-Off Compost Site will close for the season in mid December. The site re-opens in mid April.
Does the City of Marquette have wood chips available?
Yes, you can purchase a pickup load of wood chips for $5.00. The $5.00 fee will be collected at the Municipal Service Center, 850 W. Baraga Avenue, (228-0444) where a receipt will be written for you. This receipt will need to be presented at the compost site prior to getting the wood chips. This service is available for city and non-city residents. You will have to load your own vehicle.
Which bills can I pay at City Hall?
You can pay your city property taxes, city utility bills, and your BLP bills at Marquette City Hall. Go to the Financial Services Office located on the upper level of City Hall, at 300 W. Baraga Avenue.

You may call Water Billing at 288-0420, located in the Financial Services Office of City Hall, with billing questions. The Municipal Service Center is responsible for the maintenance of the water utility; they can be reached at 228-0444.
Where do I purchase a Marquette City street map?
A City street map can be purchased at the Municipal Service Center, 850 W Baraga Avenue. A fee structure has been developed that reflects the different sizes available and varied amounts of detail that can be provided, so please call 228-0444 prior to purchasing.
What are the Marquette City Hall office hours?
City office hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, during the winter. The hours are from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, during the summer.

A request in writing to the Assistant City Engineer, Keith Whittington (228-0444), should be made at least 3 weeks in advance. The fee to have such an activity is $95.00.
