The Willow Run story, presented by Randy Hotton, starts with Roosevelt’s call in May 1940 to build 50,000 airplanes per year and his decision to draft the president of General Motors Corporation to organize America’s industry. Mr. Hotton will discuss world and national events leading up to the decision to involve the auto industry in the construction of bombers for WWII and, ultimately, to build the Willow Run Bomber Plant. The presentation will also include a short history of the Yankee Air Museum, which is in the process of saving a portion of the bomber plant as its future home. 9/24/2014 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM (Library Event-Caroline Kennedy Library) The Days of Detroit, 1701-2014
This fascinating story, presented by local historian Dr. James McConnell, of the founding and growth of Detroit focuses on key days and events in its more than 300-year history. From Cadillac to Pontiac, from Ford to Polk, personalities are the key to understanding our past. Destroyed by fire in 1805, Detroit experiences eras of rapid expansion in both the 19th and the 20th centuries. Detroit was the ʻplace to beʼ in the years after the opening of the Erie Canal, after the Civil War when so many diverse industries emerged, and certainly in the 1920s when it truly became the Motor City. Learn about some of the important events in the history of the Motor City. For a reminder call, please register at the circulation desk or call 313-791-3800.
