3/1/2016 8:00 AM (The Electric Company Artists' Co-op) Rod Adams - Featured Artist for March
Rod Adams, well-known watercolor artist and member of The Electric Company Artists' Co-op, is a featured artist for the month of March. Rod began painting and drawing at a very early age. Several hospitalizations for lung problems provided time to hone his artistic skills. He has been painting in transparent watercolors for the past 30 years, accepting this challenging medium to paint pictures that he would describe as borderline photographic. He paints a variety of subject matter, but his favorite color seems to be rust, as in old trucks and other metallic objects. Rod has been working on a 6 x 10 foot commissioned oil painting for the past several months entitled "Shallow Crossing", a picture with cattle, cowboys on horseback and a stream running through a rocky, western desert setting. He hopes to complete it soon so that he can devote his painting hours to his beloved watercolors. Rod will be present at the TECAC gallery, 207 E. Depot St in Bedford, for the March 11 Second Friday event from 5 - 8 p.m. , to greet visitors and discuss his work.

3/11/2016 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM (The Electric Company Artists' Co-op) Youth Art Month
Local area high schools are celebrating YAM (Youth Art Month) with a 3-D display of student's work at The Electric Company Artists' Co-op on Depot Street in Bedford for the month of March. Art compels students to think! Today's educational emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), although certainly worthwhile, needs to include the arts for balanced learning and enhanced problem-solving. Liberty High School students were challenged to think creatively and make a unique sculpture in the round using their hands. Students worked in tandem to form a plaster armature with plaster tape. The sculptures needed to be free standing, reflective of their personalities or make a political statement. An amazing collection emerged representing animals, music, locations important to the students, steampunk scientists, The Vietnam War Memorial Wall, and nature, to mention just a few. The students each formed plaster casts of his or her hand and forearm, and made sketches depicting sculpture ideas. Creative problem solving to get the sculpture to stand on its own came next, and a choice of theme. Painting and embellishments followed, along with an artist statement. The public is encouraged to support the area high school students' art by coming to the March 11th Second Friday reception from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the TECAC gallery to view their work and/or any time during March. Winter gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

3/11/2016 5:00 PM (Art Show) Quirky Museum Perspectives at Goose Creek Studio
Goose Creek Studio will feature a series of oil paintings by Shelley Koopmann titled, "A Day at the Museum" during the months of March and April. An opening reception will be held during 2nd Friday, March 11, 5-8 p.m. A couple of months ago, Shelley Koopmann visited the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. in order to absorb and enjoy the art. She walked around the gallery, observing people as they viewed the artwork, and then photographed scenes that stood out to her. Each photograph then became a piece that was painted for this collection. Initially, she just painted one or two of the pictures for her own experimentation, but then became hooked. In each painting is a recreation of one of the paintings that hangs in the museum. The recreations of famous pieces in Shelley’s work are extremely tiny and detailed, and one can only imagine the skill and patience it took to replicate. Shelley enjoys painting people, quirky things, and anything that makes her happy. The simplicity of day-to-day life tends to be an inspiration. Her pieces are action not static, capturing “a moment in time.” She is mostly self-taught, however she does take some classes now to further improve her skill. What makes Shelley’s work unique is the unusual subject matter. For this particular collection, she creates original artwork out of strangers viewing famous artwork. It’s an interesting perspective and has some irony to it.
